IDX-100-E endura system for GY-HD111E

December 25, 2007

Okay, I’ve had a day to play (with batteries, yeah I know, excitement plus!) and I’m going to put down my first impressions.

First of all, the build quality is excellent (as one would expect from a $2000 system). The bracket for the camera is sturdy (and comes with its own screws I noticed this morning, and swapped sheepishly) and the V-loc adapter is very nice, holding the batteries quite firmly with no fear of them coming loose, but requiring very little effort in removal. Images of the GY-HD1xx series with the IDX-100-X installed can be found here along with a very good review of the camera (still pending my write-up on the camera! I’m so time-poor!)

It is December

December 21, 2007

In an unfortunate turn, its looking like no football show season DVD will be produced by Christmas. I believe we will still produce the DVD, although interest was much lower than we anticipated and the risks were great in what is our busiest time of year. That said, I’ll still produce it myself if need be and sell copies individually as I think it really needs to get out there – it really is a great showcase of not only Tasmanian football talent, but also the quality our video production can achieve when we set ourselves to the task!
The King Lear project over, I was called in to shoot the actual performance. I found that killing some of the low-end on the EQ helped the sound – as per shooting theatre with one mic it generally comes out with a reverb that is not at all desirable. If I begin working more frequently in theatre, I do believe that I will work out a superior system for audio capture so we get a nice, even, flat sound instead of the slightly echo-ey sound that we catch using a very basic method.
I recorded the show in PAL SD Progressive 16:9, and am becoming quite used to working with and shooting in progressive format. The picture quality is simply phenomenal, although I can’t tell whether that is the progressive capture, or the lovely glass on the front of my camera, which is helping. That said, colour reproduction and sharpness of image captured on my GY-HD111E has always been amazing. Especially working under theatre lights in a show that was very dark, I was very pleased with how good everything turned out.
I’ve also ordered my battery system for the camera, which should arrive Monday or Tuesday with any luck. Australian Air Express have always been very good with my deliveries. In fact, I took a delivery early this week of a new external HDD enclosure – A Pleiades IceCube II SATA with the lot, FireWire 400 + 800, eSATA and USB2. The enclosure has exceptional build quality and seems to manage heat extremely well – the Western Digital 500Gb drive I have in it at the moment has barely brought it up to room temperature. I’d recommend this case to any professional, it uses the Oxford bridge chipset so it is reliable and high quality – it definitely pays to avoid those loathsome Prolific chipset based enclosures. These are the sort of enclosures that they sell for $50 ~ $100 in your local dodgy PC store. Avoid for professional use!

Back to work now and then away for a Christmas thing. Not long til Falls Festival now, I’ll be sure to do a write-up and describe how that goes, from what works to what doesn’t, any issues we have and how the IDX power system for the GY-HD111E fares!

Cheers

Justin

Still kicking

December 12, 2007

Still alive, although seems like its just.

Work has been non-stop, between shooting and editing I rarely get a second off. I’ll find the time to upload the football show and the Round Earth Theatre Project soon I hope, HDD troubles have slowed that down substantially (not to mention finding the cut and render time to do this stuff). I show a Sheep Dog training video which will be edited shortly as well through DVCOM, so that’s pretty cool – actually an edit I look forward to. Been working on the Bagdad Music Hall, almost done with that and that’ll be done for another year.

Still haven’t ordered my battery system for Falls, its getting really late!! Waiting on payment sucks – luckily I can order the batteries as soon as its through, hopefully tomorrow as I’d like to be running the system ASAP.

Rendertime.
